Here is a
press release from the Italian Space Agency (dated 8th October 2008) that I only just came across. In collaboration with the SAP the space agency may be piloting a scheme to use their COSMO-SkyMed system to monitor and protect the sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia. The idea is that satellites can monitor changes to the site, such as damage from natural causes (like general decay or bradyseism) or that caused by man. This is another of Renato Profili’s babies, so let’s see if the new commissario continues with it.
