Do any of you know if anyone has ever done a catalogue of mythological subjects for Pompeian wall painting?

There is, of course, the set of volumes Pitture e Pavimenti di Pompeii, which is a manner of index for all imagery in wall paintings & mosaics. It's a pain to use, but I've been able to find what I'm looking for--but only if it is a rather defined subject & not the tremendously broad "mythological subjects."
ReplyDeleteThe Pitture e Mosaici volumes have the same problem, although you could spend a few days flicking through them to find the mythologicals ...
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, the new Electa catalogue of the wall-paintings of Pompeii and Herculaneum (for the current MANN exhibition) has a section on mythologicals. But it's not a catalogue.
David Meadows has commented on the Facebook site, and suggested the LIMC (Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae). Check out this URL for description - http://www.limcnet.org/LIMCLink/LIMC/tabid/198/Default.aspx.
ReplyDeletePaging through volumes of LIMC would be far, far more onerous than using the PPP indices, since you have much more than Pompeian wall painting included in that resource.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it may sound recherche, older classics like Helbig, Wandgemaelde (1868) -- and even the analytic index to Real Museo Borbonico (1857?) are quite good for the subject matter of Pompeian wall painting (bearing in mind that much of the wall painting has to be seen "as through a glass darkly"). It would be interesting to see a thorough, up to date, catalogue raisonne of Pompeian painting.
