Melbourne Museum's Winter Masterpiece A Day in Pompeii will open from dawn until midnight, Saturday 24 October.
Australians have less than two weeks to visit the Melbourne Museum's Winter Masterpiece exhibition, A Day in Pompeii, which closes on Sunday 25 October. On Saturday 24 October this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the legendary Roman city brought to life will have special extended hours of 6.30am to midnight.
So far more than 275,000 people, including 78,000 visitors from interstate and 38,000 school children, have experienced A Day in Pompeii. The exhibition tells the story of life in the ancient city, from food and dining to shopping, medicine and religion, and includes exquisite objects including marble sculpture, gold jewellery and delicate frescoes.
"A Day in Pompeii has surpassed expectations and is now - with 12 days still to go - the most successful touring exhibition ever presented at Melbourne Museum" said The Hon Lynne Kosky, Minister for the Arts.
"We are extending opening hours on the last four days to give visitors an extra chance to see the exhibition before it has to close. We want to go out with a bang." said Brett Dunlop, Manager, Melbourne Museum.
Saturday 24 October will feature a toga party. Visitors are encouraged to dress up in a toga and enjoy all day entertainment including music late into the night.
The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series is now firmly established as a must see cultural event and is a Victorian Government initiative that brings outstanding exhibitions from around the world exclusively to Melbourne. Before closing on Sunday 26 October, more than 300,000 visitors are expected to have visited the exhibition.
A Day in Pompeii is presented in association with the Soprintendenza Speciale per I Beni Archeologici di Napoli e Pompei (SANP).
Adults $20, concession $14, children $12, family $54 (all tickets include entry to Melbourne Museum). On display until Sunday 25 October 2009.
