And this is terrifying ... Scientists are apparently about to start sinking boreholes to a depth of 4 kilometres in the Campi Flegrei caldera, in the hope of establishing whether this giant volcano will erupt in the near future. Before major eruptions, the earth's crust rises (so the report says) and this is what has been happening in Pozzuoli since the 1960s (ground levels have risen by 3 metres).
