Swedish composer Magnus Lindberg’s setting, for chorus and orchestra, of graffiti found buried in Pompeii could hardly be described as original.
The echoes of Stravinsky and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana are blatant, and his molten-lava orchestral sound sometimes takes on a Hollywood sheen. But as a celebration of the fierce pagan joy of these ancient scraps it seems exactly right.
