Discover the ancient Romans in the shadow of 

Vesuvius

The Herculaneum Society is pleased to announce two outstanding summer schools at Herculaneum for university students and adult learners. The schools will be operated by Dr Christian Biggi, Director of BIG Heritage Consultancy, with the assistance of by Dr Joanne Berry, author of The Complete Pompeii. You will be taught by a team with many years' experience in operating schools, and who have been closely involved in major initiatives in Vesuvian archaeology. You will stay in a luxurious 4* hotel in Ercolano, with easy access to the Herculaneum excavations. Appearances by guest specialists in archaeology and  history add an extra dimension. On this year's courses, provisional guests include Dr Dirk Obbink of Oxford University, world-renowned papyrologist and trustee of the Herculaneum Society, and Professor Christopher Smith, Director of the British School at Rome. 

The Society can offer up to four scholarships of £500 (€650) each to deserving students currently registered on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme. In addition, there are two free places on each course (numbers permitting) for accompanying staff to help with oversight of students. News that new archaeological discoveries have been made between Pompeii and Torre Annunzuata. The discoveries seem to include a Roman tomb, but there's little available information.

Nuovi resti archeologici tra Torre Annunziata ePompei. La sensazionale scoperta è avvenuta a via Andolfi nell’area industriale dismessa ex Aquila ed Ex Imec, dov’è in progetto un centro commerciale. Dalle prime indiscrezioni i resti sembrerebbero appartenere a una tomba romana, ma sulla cosa c’è il massimo riserbo da parte della Soprintendenza.

Poco più di un anno fa, con l’inizio dei lavori, erano state rinvenute anfore, vasi e altri oggetti probabilmente appartenuti ad abitanti dell’antica Pompei scampati all’eruzione del 79 d.C.

Subito dopo il ritrovamento, stamane, c’è stato un vertice tra il sindaco di Torre Annunziata Giosuè Starita e la Soprintendente Teresa Elena Cinquantaquattro per fare il punto sulla situazione.

Una notizia bella per studiosi e appassionati di archeologia, ma per la società proprietaria dell’area ex Aquila Prefabbricati ed ex Imec e per gli amministratori oplontini rappresenta l’ennesimo intoppo a un progetto che dovrebbe assicurare centinaia di posti di lavoro.

Appena un anno fa il sequestro temporaneo del cantiere operato dalla polizia provinciale di Napoli per il presunto inquinamento della falda acquifera sottostante e la conseguente mancata bonifica.

L’area che un tempo ospitava gli stabilimenti dell’ex Aquila prefabbricati e dell’ex Imec dovrebbe diventare una cittadella commerciale con giardini, negozi, bar e ristoranti, con un’estensione di 51mila metri quadrati.
