Quanto si dovrà aspettare per la manutenzione ordinaria a Pompei? In un recente dibattito parlamentare, l’onorevole Rutelli ha proposto all’Ales (Arte, Lavoro, Servizi) la manutenzione degli scavi archeologici di Pompei e degli altri siti vesuviani. L’Ales è una società in house del Ministero dei Beni Culturali creata come supporto alla valorizzazione dei siti archeologici ed alla conservazione del patrimonio storico. Il problema è che si tratta di una società che nei fatti, nonostante le buone intenzioni, finora non è ancora decollata, né risulta dotata di sufficiente personale qualificato nelle arti e nei mestieri necessari per il restauro conservativo di Pompei. E’ chiaro che un muratore, un fabbro, un giardiniere od un falegname che operano nell’antica città romana devono avere delle competenze specifiche, aggiuntive rispetto a quelle del semplice mestiere. C’è l’urgenza di formare sul territorio esperti ad hoc finalizzati al restauro ed alla conservazione degli scavi di Pompei e degli altri siti del territorio vesuviano.

This lecture looks at the way that Herculaneum was first discovered, then had its glory eclipsed by Pompeii, was gradually neglected and forgotten, then experienced a new period of glory in the mid-twentieth century, only to fall again into neglect. The lecture will focus on the struggles of the Herculaneum Conservation Project, under the auspices of the Packard Humanities Institute, to revive Herculaneum again. Appropriately, Liverpool has its own forgotten glory, in the Herculaneum Pottery, revived by Peter Hyland’s book.

Alle porte di Pompei scoperto un vigneto d'età romana tra i meglio conservati di sempre
Intorno a quella che un giorno sarebbe stata la sua tomba, Trimalcione voleva un orto, un frutteto ma soprattutto un vigneto. Facile comprendere dove il liberto arricchito del «Satyricon» di Petronio volesse andare a parare: nell'economia primaria del I secolo dopo Cristo, il nettare di Bacco era moneta sonante. Non c'è da stupirsi allora che intorno alla ricca Pompei si distendessero un tempo ettari coltivati a vite a perdita d'occhio. E che proprio a una manciata di chilometri dalla città sepolta dall'eruzione vesuviana del 79 d.C. sia stato in questi giorni ritrovato quello che presumibilmente è uno tra vigneti meglio conservati di età romana.

A portarlo alla luce una campagna di scavo condotta dall'Istituto archeologico germanico di Berlino e finanziata dal Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, ossia l'equivalente tedesco del nostro Cnr. 

Lavori diretti da Florian Seiler, archeologo da lungo tempo attivo nell'area vesuviana che ha coordinato uno staff internazionale e interdisciplinare, all'interno del quale figurano Pia Kastenmeier, Domenico Esposito e Catello Imperatore. Luogo del rinvenimento, il comune di Scafati, confinante con Pompei ma rientrante nella giurisdizione della provincia di Salerno e, quindi, di competenza della locale Soprintendenza archeologica guidata da Adele Campanelli.

So- called Villa of Augustus - Updates and Open Days

To celebrate the results of this year's fieldwork and share the new discoveries with the general public, the so-called Villa of Augustus will be open this weekend (6-7 Oct, 9am-5pm).
Since 2002, this annual event has constantly increased in importance among the locals and last year roughly 3,000 people visited the site in just two days.

The most interesting discovery of the year is probably the presence of ploughing furrows and footprints of animals which were escaping the eruption in AD 472.
