Save the Gladiator Tomb in Rome (Mausoleum of Marcus Nonius Macrinus on the Via Flaminia)

In the name of preserving one of the most important discoveries in Rome in decades, we appeal to:

* Marco Perina, Assessore alla Cultura del XX Municipio

The site of the "Gladiator tomb" is one of overwhelming cultural and historic value not only for Italy but for all of humanity. Given the response from the academic world and public enthusiasm since its discovery in 2008 for the incredible level of preservation of the site, quality of the tombs and section of Via Flaminia road, and identification of Marcus Nonius Macrinus' mausoleum (readily linked in the press with Russell Crowe's Maximus Gladiator character from Ridley Scott's Gladiator), we believe that the study of site should continue and the site should not be abandoned nor reburied.
Currently, the funding of cultural heritage in Italy (and the world) is, indeed, lamentably lacking, but the "Gladiator tomb" site is exactly the sort of discovery that serves to remind us we need to support heritage sites beyond the initial excavation, discovery, and study. And few discoveries around world have struck a chord with such a large worldwide audience. Conservation of the site merits further attention and discussion on costs and overall plans for the site should be open for further discussion.

We, the undersigned archaeologists, scholars, scientists, and members of the general public from all over the world now join with an increasingly large number of Italian citizens to raise our voices in protest against the covering of this unique site and we advocate a forum to discuss alternative solutions.

Pompei. Catastrofi sotto il Vesuvio

Madrid, Centro dell’Arte Fondazione Canal de Isabel II

6 dicembre 2012 - 5 Maggio 2013

Pompei. Catastrofi sotto il Vesuvio è il titolo della mostra che dal 6 dicembre fino al 5 maggio aprirà al pubblico spagnolo e internazionale a Madrid, presso la Fondazione Canal de Isabel II (Plaza de Castilla).

Oltre 350 reperti in esposizione provenienti dai siti protostorici di Nola e Poggiomarino oltre che da Pompei e dai più noti siti archeologici vesuviani. In un unico percorso espositivo sono illustrati gli effetti delle varie eruzioni vulcaniche che hanno sconvolto la Campania e l’area vesuviana, dal II millennio a.C. alla più famosa eruzione del 79 d.C., che seppellì per circa 1700 anni le città di Pompei ed Ercolano

Alla presentazione della mostra, organizzata dalla Fondazione Canal in collaborazione con il Landesmuseum di Halle (Germania) e curata dal prof. Martìn Almagro, dell'Accademia Reale spagnola, era presente l'ambasciatore d'Italia a Madrid Leonardo Visconti di Modrone, la Soprintendente Teresa E. Cinquantaquattro e la direttrice del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli Valeria Sampaolo.

Un allestimento molto suggestivo, arricchito da proiezioni multimediali che accompagnano alla visita delle pitture, delle argenterie, delle sculture provenienti dalla casa del Menandro, dalla casa del Citarista di Pompei e dalla villa del Petraro di Stabia. L'esposizione si conclude con una sezione dedicata al ruolo dei Borbone, in particolare di Carlo III, nella scoperta dei siti vesuviani e con una sezione dedicata agli insediamenti romani in Spagna a sottolineare gli stretti e profondi legami che uniscono Napoli con la penisola iberica.
