Walk like a Roman
When the ancient geographer Strabo described the native inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula, he listed – with a predictable combination of relish, horror and exaggeration – all kinds of aspects of their weird barbarity. Some of the Spanish tribesmen, he insisted, stored vintage urine in cisterns and then bathed in it, or used it to clean their teeth. Others dressed their women up with iron rods around their necks rather than jewellery. Others, still stranger, appeared to have no gods.
No less remarkable, for Strabo, was the bafflement some of these poor Spaniards felt at the day-to-day habits of their new Roman allies or conquerors. One group of tribesmen, he explained, visiting a Roman camp and seeing some generals taking a stroll, “walking up and down the road”, thought they were “mad and tried to take them back into their tents”, either to sit down and rest, or get up and fight. Despite Strabo’s patronizing tone, it’s one of those rare occasions where we can catch a glimpse of the barbarian point of view on the Romans. The Spaniards presumably thought that walking was something that got a person from A to B (or from tent to battleground). What on earth then were these Roman generals doing as they ambled around, chatting, but not actually going anywhere?
In Walking in Roman Culture, Timothy M. O’Sullivan eloquently explains that how and why a person walked were crucial cultural indicators in ancient Rome: ways of walking divided barbarians from Romans, and good Romans from bad. If this aspect of Roman culture has not often bulked large in modern studies of the ancient world, that is partly because – as O’Sullivan notes – we have chosen not to recognize it, or have even actively “translated it away”. The key Latin word is incessus, which literally means “gait” or “how a person moves on their feet”. It is now regularly translated as “bearing” or “demeanour”; but that removes all the sense of movement from it. “He has a noble bearing” may seem to us a more “natural” thing to say than “He has a noble way of walking”. It is not often what the Romans said, wrote or meant. In ancient Rome how you walked was a sign of who you were. Quite simply, it could be an indication of paternity. When people wondered whether Cleopatra’s child, young Caesarion, really was the son of Julius Caesar, they pointed to his walk (incessus) as much as to his facial features. Gait ran in families. Think, for example, how often those Roman family names (often derived – like Crassus, “Fatty”, or Rufus, “Redhead” – from physical characteristics) referred to feet or to odd ways of walking: Plautus, “flat-footed”; Valgus, “bow-legged”; Varus, “knock-kneed”. As O’Sullivan observes, “‘a family gait’ was no less distinctive than ‘a family nose’”.

L'Année Philologique en danger

The Année Philologique, a critical and analytical bibliography of Greco-Latin Antiquity, has existed since the 1920s : over the years, its generalist orientation has made it a working tool that is useful for all, whatever one's specialty may be. Since its creation and its dissemination on paper, it has been a bibliographical tool that is universally recognized, utilized, and appreciated by students of Antiquity throughout the world. Since 2002, its dissemination online has facilitated the access of an ever-broader public to the bibliographical data it offers.
However, this irreplaceable tool is threatened, in the very near future, with disappearing in its current form, and perhaps with simply ceasing publication.
More details here, with a petition.

Book: Gli spazi verdi nell'antica Pompeii

First seen on ArcheoRivista, a new book about gardens and plants in Pompeii, written by A. Ciarallo:

A. Ciarallo (with appendix by C. Giordano), Gli spazi verdi dell’antica Pompei, Roma, Aracne, 2012. 680 p. 32€ (electronic version: 22€)

ISBN: 978-88-548-4509-1

Summary from the editor's site:

Summary from Archeorivista:

JSTOR: Register and Read

A great initiative for those without institutional access:

Register & Read
Register & Read Beta is a new, experimental program to offer free, read-online access to individual scholars and researchers who register for a MyJSTOR account. Register & Read follows the release of the Early Journal Content as the next step in our efforts to find sustainable ways to extend access to JSTOR, specifically to those not affiliated with participating institutions.

How does it work?
  • Find an article that’s part of Register & Read, click on a “Get Access”option.
  • Register for a free MyJSTOR account, or log into your account if you already have one.
  • Add the content to your shelf to read the full-text online. After 14 days, you may remove it and add new items to your shelf.
  • PDF versions of some articles will also be available for purchase and download. If you purchase articles from your shelf, the PDF versions may be stored and accessed in your MyJSTOR account at any time.
Register & Read includes approximately 75 journals from more than 40 publishers, a subset of the content in JSTOR. This includes content from the first volume and issue published for these journals through a recent year (generally 3-5 years ago). We plan to add more titles at a later date. See a list of the titles and publishers. Register & Read is a beta program, and we expect to adjust aspects of the program as needed. This may include both functionality and the available content.

Article: Modeling Hypotheses in Pompeian Archaeology: The House of the Faun

A new article about the Alexander mosaic has just been uploaded to Academia.edu. It uses 3D technology to reconstruct lighting conditions and suggests that the installation of the mosaic, most likely in the Roman period, was accompanied by major rennovations in the house.

Modeling Hypotheses in Pompeian Archaeology: The House of the Faun

J. J. Dobbins, E. Gruber

Abstract
The archaeologically accepted plan of the House of the Faun at Pompeii serves as the basis for an initial 3D computer model that employs a simulated lighting script to render the lighting conditions of interior spaces at different times of the year. The model reveals that the Alexander Mosaic, lifted in 1843 and moved to the Museo Nazionale in Naples, was apparently never seen under optimum lighting conditions in its original setting. The problem is solved by providing a new interpretation of modifications made to the colonnades associated with the mosaic and then reconfiguring the model accordingly. The result is a new reconstruction of the architectural setting of the Alexander Mosaic and a new understanding of its original lighting conditions.

Digital editions from L'Erma di Bretschneider

The latest L'Erma di Bretschneider catalogue is out, with news that all its titles are to be made available (eventually) as digital editions:

Editoriale
Editorial:
«L’ERMA» becomes “digital”, too.

At last we have decided on the great step ahead the times call for.
Our publishing house is launching out on a great endeavour, and the year 2012 will see digitalisation extending to our entire catalogue of publications.
We have decided to begin with the publications sold out/out of print – those that have proved bestsellers over the years. They amount approximately 500 volumes, printed throughout something over a century in the life of the publishing house and already available in Digital Edition with the full text search system.
Besides making available to readers (scholars, students and researchers) once again an enormous database of scientific information otherwise impossible to find in the publishing market, the choice of digitalisation also means that editions can be supplied at a lower price than reprints on paper.
