The Herculaneum Society is pleased to announce two outstanding summer schools at Herculaneum for university students and adult learners. The schools will be operated by Dr Christian Biggi, Director of BIG Heritage Consultancy, with the assistance of by Dr Joanne Berry, author of The Complete Pompeii. You will be taught by a team with many years' experience in operating schools, and who have been closely involved in major initiatives in Vesuvian archaeology. You will stay in a luxurious 4* hotel in Ercolano, with easy access to the Herculaneum excavations. Appearances by guest specialists in archaeology and  history add an extra dimension. On this year's courses, provisional guests include Dr Dirk Obbink of Oxford University, world-renowned papyrologist and trustee of the Herculaneum Society, and Professor Christopher Smith, Director of the British School at Rome. 

The Society can offer up to four scholarships of £500 (€650) each to deserving students currently registered on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme. In addition, there are two free places on each course (numbers permitting) for accompanying staff to help with oversight of students. £1000 Bursary for Study at Herculaneum

Herculaneum Society AGM Meeting

The Herculaneum Society (www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk) will be holding its AGM meeting this Saturday 8 October at the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, 66 St Giles, Oxford OX1 3LU.  It will begin at 15.00 with the AGM, followed by tea at 16.00 and at 16.30 Lindsey Davis will be giving a talk entitled: "Damnatio Memoriae, a reflection on the challenge of writing a novel about Domitian".  This will be followed by a wine reception when you will have an opportunity to ask Lindsey any additional questions about Domitian (or even Falco).  Those of you who would like to join us for an early dinner at La Strada (Little Clarendon Street) at 18.30, please do, but just let the office know in advance.  Also, please let us know if you will be attending the Meeting so that we have an idea of numbers (herculaneum@classics.ox.ac.uk or telephone 01865 288260).

Third Herculaneum Conference

The Friends of Herculaneum Society is holding its Third Herculaneum Conference 11-13 June 2010 in Ercolano, Italy.

The programme includes talks by the new Director of the British School at Rome, Prof. Christopher Smith, and by the immediate past Director, Prof. Andrew Wallace-Hadrill; presentations by members of the Herculaneum Conservation project; site visit (including the Villa of the Papyri and the new boat museum) with Dr Maria Paola Guidobaldi, Director of Excavations, and Dr Domenico Camardo; an excursion up the slopes of Vesuvius; and a visit to Stabiae with Prof. Thomas Howe, Director of the Restoring Ancient Stabiae project.

The conference fee is £150 (£120 concessions) which includes all entrance fees and talks, welcome reception on Friday, dinner Fri/Sat and lunch Sat/Sun. Delegates need to arrange their own return transportation to Ercolano and accommodation; we have secured favourable rates at the new 4-star Miglio D'Oro hotel in Ercolano, and B&B accommodation is available to those who prefer it.
